How to Change a Headlight on a Passat

Volkswagen Passat has been there since 1973. In United States it was not called Passat as it was first known as Fox, after that the Dasher and Quantam, finally it got its name Passat in 1990. It is considered quite difficult to replace the headlights in a Passat because of the space deficiency in the engine bay. Although it is not impossible at all and you can do it on your own as well. This article is summarizing all steps about how to change a headlight on a Passat.

Things you’ll need:

To do your job, you will require following things:

Bulb No. H7
Pliers or socket wrench (passenger side only)

Headlight on Passat

Step 1

First of all begin with pulling off the plastic air intake cover, after that take out the intake mounting bolt and put the intake hose to one side.

Step 2

Now get to the back of the headlight assembly to twist off the protective rubber cover. Now push the tab to pull off the electrical connector.

Step 3

Next turn the bulb socket in anticlockwise direction to unbolt it, and afterward sneak it out from the assembly.

Step 4

To release the bulb from socket turn it anti clockwise. Now take a new bulb then turn it in clockwise direction and hold its plastic base while its installation. Keep in mind that

Hold the plastic base of the new bulb when installing it. Touching the glass can result in its failure.

Step 5

Put in the module and turn it in clockwise direction to lock it into the assembly. Attach the electrical connector once again and twist the protective rubber cover onto the back of the assembly.

Step 6

Reattach the passenger side intake hose which you have detached earlier plus tighten the bolt. Put plastic intake cover back.

Tips & Warnings

The discussed procedure is appropriate for all models of the Volkswagen Passat, i.e. from 2001.5 to 2009. Although in case of older models, it may require different type of bulb.
