It is obviously too annoying to have a broken or damaged horn in your vehicle. It sometimes irritates others but is absolutely necessary particularly to alert other drivers. Accordingly it is important as a security feature and must be kept unbroken to avoid risks. If your car horn is not working as it supposed to then before replacing it try to check what is actually going wrong with it. Here’s how to fix a broken car horn.

Things you’ll need:

Following things are necessary to deal with a broken horn:

  • Screwdriver
  • Car horn

Step 1:

Before you consider replacing your car horn first get to the horn fuse (which you will find under the hood in a fuse box) and the wiring. Check if this fuse is burnt, if it is then replace it and put back the disconnected wiring to the wiring harness. After you have done with it check the horn again if it now works.

Step 2:

You may take away the horn’s problem by simply adjusting the adjustment screw on the horn’s body. For its adjustment you can use a flathead or Phillips screwdriver but it depends on the car model as well as the type of horn. Now turn the screw tighter until you listen for the horn to sound loudly. At the moment when you feel a harsh sound, turn the screw in the opposite direction until you listen to the correct sound.

Step 3:

Next, remove the old horn (may be damaged). For this reason disconnect its electrical connector plus unscrew it from its mounting bracket. Now put both horns (new and old) in front of you and then compare them to see if the new horn can securely fit in the old bracket. If you not satisfied with the old bracket then get a new one for your new horn.

Step 4:

Now fit the new horn in your car. In case if you are installing a brand new horn and bracket, it may require installing it in a new location. There are certain typical locations for installing the horn in a car these include the locations are under the battery, between the fender and inner fender, or behind the grille. Don’t forget to take help from your new horn’s installation instructions.

Step 5:

Now connect the wiring to the new horn. If this horn would not work correctly with the original wiring harness you are connecting with, then it is required to connect the wires for both the car and the horn collectively. Here Soldering is the best approach. So put the solder on the bare wire leads at the time when you apply the heat gun to it, after that insulate the leads with heat shrink wrapping.
