When you happen to install an alternator on your Ford 302, see the label on the alternator that shows the amperage rating. Each alternator has different amperage output ratings that usually based on the manufacturing of your vehicle. It is observed that a small alternator frequently gets heated sooner and stops working at all. You should always check the plastic connector for the stator due to a major problem Ford has with this connector melting as well as overheating. A new connector always comes with the new alternator and must be used in case of melting otherwise lack of insulation. Now let see how to install a Ford 302 alternator.

Things you’ll need:

You will need the following tools to install an alternator to your Ford 302:

  • Set of wrenches
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • Set of 3/8-inch drive sockets
  • Wire crimper tool

Step 1:

Use a wrench to take out the serpentine belt for moving the tensioner away from the belt. This will relax the tension and belt will be removed easily. Use a wrench to cut off the negative terminal on the battery.

Step 2:

Now detach the plastic electrical connector, the large battery and wire from the back of the alternator as well. Do away with the upper and lower bolts that are there to secure the alternator to the engine bracket. And then take out the alternator.
