New Caterham Is a Race Car!

Those present at the 2011 Autosport International racing car show in Birmingham were eagerly waiting to see Caterham’s all-new model, which had been teased from a month ago.

But as it turned out it’s not a new road-going sportscar, rather a prototype race car.

The Caterham Lola SP/300.R follows the same Caterham recipe for lightness and makes the best of its horsepower. It is powered by supercharged version of the Ford Duratec power plant, expected to produce around 300bhp. Lola has worked on the chassis and suspension to make sure it handles beautifully.

The SP300 is designed for a one-make racing series to be held form 2012, and also for those who want a top-notch weapon for track-day fun. They will only make 20 units per year though.

“Motorsport is not only part of the history of Caterham, it’s been the lifeblood running through the character of our vehicles – race cars for the road,” explains Ansar Ali, managing director of Caterham Cars. “Today, racing is not only the heartbeat of the business, it’s an intrinsic part of our fabric both here and abroad and the SP/300.R represents the next logical step in the development of our product offering.”
