Ferrari 599 GTO Review

The Ferrari 599 GTO is the Scuderia equivalent of the GTB Berlinetta designed for those who want a super stylish track weapon to make their millionaire friends envious!

The GTO is a magnificent looking car. It has not changed much from the original GTB, it just gets new mesh grilles, a blacked-out roof, a massive rear diffuser and newly designed wheels, but these little revisions add up to make a big difference.

The V12 engine is also upgraded, from 612 to 670 hp, and the car is lightened and stripped-out to become lighter. So it is biblical around the track, only if you can get tame it! This car is unbelievably tricky to handle.

When the traction control is on, you can’t really make the most out of that 670 hp as it’s constantly interfering. Turn the TC off and then you are going to need super human powers to cope with the car’s reaction or you either spin out at every corner or turn the back wheels into smoke after 5 minutes!

So if you get it wrong it’ll kill you. Get it right though and you will be able to lap Fiorano circuit faster than the Enzo!

Ferrari 599 GTO is equipped with the latest, second-generation carbon-ceramic brakes which are lighter and offer better performance, new aerodynamic innovations, such as the wheel doughnuts which increase aerodynamic efficiency as well as improve brake cooling, and the Supersport tyres developed by Michelin include a wider front tyre for greater roadholding. The driver-car interface is also new with the adoption of the Virtual Race Engineer (VRE) which provides the driver with instantaneous information on performance.

It is a brilliant technical machine, but it’s not as refined to use on roads as the GTB and far too tricky for ordinary drivers to use on track. The thing is, most of those who buy this car don’t really care about these things! They just want a good looking limited edition Ferrari for their garage and GTO serves that purpose pretty darn good!
