There are several types of car shocks. The most common and inexpensive car shocks are oil filled car shocks which are quite older. Although these shocks offered some problems that they eventually fail to work once they happen to be heated and then oil in the shock becomes thinner. Another type is nitrogen-filled shocks which are filled with nitrogen and oil, and solves the problem of older one i.e. overheating. Nowadays these car shocks are used on a larger scale providing the best performance. Each type of shock tends to offer a different type of performance and functioning. Here’s how to check car shocks.

Things you’ll need:

The things required to check a car shock include:

Step 1:

First begin with push up and down on the front and after that the rear of your vehicle. This way is used for a long time and is the oldest one. Although pushing up and down may be difficult for some vehicles because of their body style and deficiency of protruding bumpers. During this process, the vehicle is supposed to show resistance to push down, and at the time when the front or rear is rocked, the vehicle must prevent rocking at once when released. If it continues to rock, then surely the shocks are damaged.

Step 2:

Now take your vehicle out over a rough surface. While driving if your vehicle presents rocking or else pitching it will indicate worn shocks. Now drive your vehicle slow and temporarily hit the brakes. If it begins to produce noise or rocks two or three times sooner than coming to rest, the shocks are worn. In this case shocks will not support the vehicle and offer resistance to the up and down movement of the vehicle. You will find it very difficult to hold a shock and trying to depress it. You will experience the similar difficulty while trying to extend the shock.

Step 3:

Lift up and support the vehicle with the help of jack stands. Now if there any leakage from shocks, it indicates a poor seal. In this case if the shocks have a bad seal, you have to replace them.
