Skoda Superb Gets New Engine, 4×4 Drivetrain

As one of the most understated sedans in the European and Australian market, Skoda Superb has never been the center of attention, and that’s why we like it! It feels special.

Now the car has received an upgrade with the addition of the new 103kW diesel engine, and a versatile four-wheel drivetrain. The 103TDI diesel engine in the new Superb offering is exceptionally fuel efficient and works with common-rail direct injection. Driven by this engine, the Superb only needs 6.1 litres of diesel to cover 100 kilometres. Power output is 103kW and maximum 320Nm is delivered between 1750rpm and 2500rpm. Combined with Škoda’s fourdrive system, the Superb achieves 6.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres.

As for the 4×4 system, it is controlled electronically by a fourth-generation Haldex clutch, and distributes the power between the wheels based on the traction.

Engine And Transmission
The 103TDI diesel engine shines at practically every engine speed with categorically high torque; it already delivers its maximum 320NM starting at 1,750rpm and holds it constant up to 2,500rpm.

Fuel economy figures are remarkably low with the Superb 103TDI only needing 6.1 litres of diesel to cover 100 kilometres, with CO2 emissions of 161 g/km (Wagon 6.2L/km; 164g/km). The Superb 4×4 103TDI consumes 6.4L/km and CO2 emissions are a low 167g/km (Wagon 6.5L/km; 171g/km).

The 103kW 2.0-litre diesel engine is exceptionally fuel efficient and works with the latest generation common-rail direct injection. Here fuel induction up to 1,800 bar injection pressure and special eight-hole injection nozzles deliver especially fine atomisation of the diesel fuel.

Compared to conventional solenoid valves, piezo technology enables more flexible injection processes with smaller and more precisely metered fuel volumes. The benefit of this technology is a very quiet and pleasantly smooth running engine, exceptional responsiveness and low fuel consumption and emissions. Also having a positive effect on acoustics is the completely maintenance-free toothed belt drive of the camshaft.

Škoda’s advanced four-wheel-drive is designed to tackle those challenging conditions that would leave twowheel drive competitors scrabbling for grip. Power distribution is controlled electronically by a fourth-generation Haldex clutch. Under normal traction conditions, 96% of the total power is directed to the front axle. In adverse weather conditions the Haldex system reacts in a split second to redirect power to those wheels with better traction, greatly increasing driving safety.

The electronic control unit evaluates all the necessary information such as wheel speed, accelerator pedal position, engine speed, and data from the chassis stability programmes. This information is used to regulate the value and development of the hydraulic pressure on the clutch discs. The clutch can vary the torque distribution ratio between the front and rear wheels from 98:2 up to 2:98.

When braking, the Haldex clutch automatically disconnects, to increase stability. If a sensor fails or the control unit receives questionable information, the clutch goes into a structured ‘emergency’ programme. If the signals from the wheel revolution sensors are interrupted, the clutch is deactivated for safety reasons and torque is transmitted to the front wheels only.

Safety And Convenience
Passenger protection in every Superb is of the highest level, starting with its standard nine airbags – front driver and passenger airbags, front and rear side airbags, curtain airbags and driver’s knee airbag are standard across the range. Also standard is the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and a wide array of electronic safety systems, which ensure good steering control of the vehicle in various situations. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Anti- Slip Regulation (ASR) are standard components of the braking system of every Superb, as well as a dual rate brake booster, which contributes to a shorter braking distance in critical situations.

The standard equipment across all trim levels – Ambition, 4×4 Ambition, Elegance and 4×4 Elegance – is extraordinary and ensures every choice is sophisticated, luxurious and practical.

Dual-zone climate control air-conditioning, multi-function trip computer, Bluetooth, MP3 auxiliary input socket, cruise control, light assistant, front foglights with corner function, rear parking sensors with acoustic warning and optical display, chrome interior trim and a leather package for the four-spoke multi-function steering wheel, gearshift lever and handbrake grip, are standard across the entire range. For the Superb Wagon range, the innovative Park Assist parallel parking system which includes front parking sensors comes as standard.
