First Drive 2011 Mazda2


The body structure of Mazda2 is about 10 % lighter than the old model. The car’s steel is about 53 percent high strength type, quite similar to the Fiesta ratio. Mazda2 has been careful in applying the welding and has saved about 6 pounds, much efficient and smaller wiring package saved another 6.4 pounds, hood hatches after redesigning weighed lesser by 5.5 pounds.

Overall, Mazda2 gives a feel of small car which you would want to take anywhere, a smart choice for urbanite or young drivers who are interested in cross country trips. Even though its each component is on a diet, yet this is quiet, steady and refined car.

It idles steadily and quietly and then accelerates in a smooth way, with the manual gearbox. Any full throttle downshift is abrupt and loud in automatic equipped 2.

Mazda’s powertrains are quite different from that of Ford Fiesta. Mazda2 comes with 1.5 liter engine, twin-cam four with variable valve timing, which is about 98cc smaller than the engine in Ford.

However, Mazda2 falls short on fuel economy. It is 29/35 mpg for manual, which is ok. The four speed is automatic and rare and fails to match the manual gearbox power and efficiency having a rating of 27/33, which is far below the fiesta twin-clutch best of 29/40.

The interiors are pleasant for its passengers. The interior package is tall having sufficient rear headroom and good rear legroom for all those sub-six footers, who will get lots of space underneath the front seats. The environment for driver and front seat passengers is airy and light, with big window on the front as a result of which dashboard looks quite large and not that of some minivan.
