A common question which can come to a mind is how much it costs to drive a mile in your car. The standard MPG is usually used for measuring the fuel efficiency of a car. But since the prices of gas are significantly higher as they were nearly 10 years back, the time has come to reevaluate the way of measuring our gas consumption.

After reading an article on MSN autos titled ‘Gasoline’s New Math’, it makes one think how much it really costs to drive every time when taking a trip to a departmental store or the mall.

The article suggests that instead of calculating miles per gallon (MPG), we should be thinking about miles per dollar or MPD.

So the question arises that how miles per dollar or MPD is calculated. It is a simple process that has fairly two steps. First, the car’s MPG has to be figured out. The method for doing this is by dividing the travelled distance and the number of gallons consumed by the car, or a manufacturer’s estimate can be used. Next, the MPG has to be divided by the price of a gallon of gas. The result is the estimated miles per dollar of the car.

The important question is how far a dollar will take you, the number might be surprising.

According to the website – Forbes.com, USA has some of the best selling cars according to their estimated miles per dollar. They are based on the national average of 2.58 Dollars per gallon. Following is the list of those cars;

  1. Chevrolet Silverado (17 mpg) — 6.6 MPD
  2. Ford F-Series (16 mpg) — 6.2 MPD
  3. Ford Focus (28 mpg) — 10.9 MPD
